MOUNTAINEERING – reaching the top

Being born in a mountain country, hiking was always a part of my life. When a facebook friend of mine sent me an invitation for a hiking trip on a mountain nearby, my friend Maja and I jumped right into the opportunity. Thus, our mountaineering journey has begun.

One beautiful November day a hiking expedition took us on a 1500m altitude and it was the first one I was a part of in a group. There were participants present from all over the country and some from the surrounding countries. The cheerful atmosphere and the elevating spirit of the hikers were contagious. I knew a lot of people already since the event took place some 20km away from my home town. Nevertheless, I met a lot of new interesting individuals who were so helpful and full of understanding for us – the beginners.

The key role in my perseverance in mountaineering was played by a few members of our society “Zmaj” Zvecan. Maja and I had many concerns starting out this adventure. We were worried about whether we had the right equipment, the weather, the strength… so many questions. But with their soothing words, some useful advices and a few jokes, all worries were left behind.

The feeling of getting to the top of a mountain is not the only thing that kept me in this world. It’s the journey itself. The people. The adventure. There were moments when I couldn’t go further, when I was soaking wet, when I climbed the mountain only to be whipped by the strong wind and hail… but when the nature opens-up, that’s when the magic happens.

Sure, it’s not always possible to sync our daily responsibilities with the mountaineering trips, but when you set it as a goal – things evolve on its own. Once you get to inhale the smell of full blossoming nature you become full with deep powerful presence of life. There is no coming back from that.

And at the top – everything is different there! You get this feeling of accomplishment. At this moment you really do feel like you are the king/queen of the world. You have succeeded; you have won and climbed that mountain! It may not be a very high mountain, but the sense of victory is there nevertheless. This is one of the best feelings in the world!

These feelings and moments are not exclusive. For all interested in mountaineering, know that there is no limit. They say that it is the sport for all from 7-77 years of age, and there sure were people over that age. You are the ones who are setting the boundaries and you are the ones breaking them. In Serbia, you can find a mountaineering club in any city. Don’t waste your time, join them and with a bit of good will become a part of the nature.

HAPPY MOUNTAINEERING!!

Wow, these look like beautiful mountains! We loved hiking in Romania, and would love to hike more in Eastern Europe. And I’m impressed that you can hike in white pants and stay so clean! 😉
